Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede has been appointed as the the Chairman of Access Holdings. This is coming after the burial of the past CEO, Herbert Wigwe, who lost his life in a helicopter crash in the United States.

Aigboje is overseeing the non-executive arm of Access Holdings 10 years after he served as the bank’s Chief Executive Officer.

Who is Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede?

Born on the 24th of September, 1966 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Aig-Imoukhuede hails from a family with civil service backgrounds, with his father, Frank Aig-Imoukhuede, and mother, historian Emily Aig-Imoukhuede (née Ihonde). He has three siblings: Erekpitan, Oluwakemi, and Aigbovbioise.

Early Life and Educational Background

Aig-Imoukhuede attended St. Saviours School in Lagos and later went to Federal Government College Kaduna, in Northern Nigeria.

At the age of 16, he was admitted to study law at the University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria, where he graduated with an LLB degree in 1986 at the age of 19. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987.

Aig-Imoukhuede also holds a Trium MBA, awarded jointly by the London School of Economics, New York University, and HEC Paris. In 2000, he attended a three-month Executive Management Programme course at Harvard Business School.

Career and Achievements

His career began as a lawyer with Continental Merchant Bank during his NYSC year in 1988, where He proceeded to join Guaranty Trust Bank Plc in December 1991 and resigned as an executive director in March 2002.

Aig as he is fondly called was instrumental in the 2002 acquisition of Access Bank, transforming it from a fringe regional player to a significant financial institution.

Aig-Imoukhuede’s Wife and Children

Aig-Imoukhuede is married to Ofovwe Aig-Imoukhuede. Together, they have four children: Ohiozoje, Aima, Morenike, and Renuan.

Ofovwe Aig-Imoukhuede is a philanthropist, lawyer, and banker with over twenty-nine years of experience in the financial and not-for-profit sectors. She is the wife of Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, a prominent Nigerian banker and investor. Together, they co-founded the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, which aims to end poverty and improve access to primary healthcare in Africa.

Ofovwe has taken a leading role in the foundation as the Executive Vice Chair, where she oversees the family’s philanthropic activities and commitments. These include building Nigeria’s next generation of government leaders, transforming public sector effectiveness, and improving access to quality primary healthcare.

Her work with the foundation is part of a broader commitment to drive social change and create a lasting impact on society, particularly in the areas of public sector leadership training and healthcare delivery programs². Ofovwe and her husband’s philanthropic efforts are focused on activities that will have a significant impact on the way the public sector is run and on improving healthcare for the average Nigerian.

Aig in response to his appointment said he was confident in working on “Dr Wigwe’s shared vision which he gave everything for” and also ensure that it is realised.
