Davis Chirchir is a Kenyan politician and IT expert. He served in the recently dissolved cabinet of President William Ruto as the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum.
Early Life and Education
Davis Chirchir was born in 1960 in Cheptigit, Kericho County, Kenya. He attended Kericho High School from 1974 to 1978 and completed his Form 6 in 1980. He then pursued a degree in Physics and Computer Science at the University of Nairobi, graduating in 1985. Chirchir furthered his education with a Master’s in Business Administration in International Management from the Royal Holloway School of Management, University of London.
Career and Appointments
Chirchir began his career at Kenya Post and Telecommunication Corporation as a tele-traffic engineer.
He later became a senior manager at Telkom Kenya. His political career took off when he served as the Secretary General for the United Republican Party (URP) from 2011 to 2013. Chirchir played a significant role in the Jubilee Party’s successes in the 2013 and 2017 general elections. He also served as the Interim Independent Electoral Commission’s (IIEC) Director of Information Technology and was appointed Chief Presidential Agent by Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.
In 2022, President William Ruto appointed him as the Cabinet Secretary in Charge of Energy and Petroleum. However, he was dismissed from this position in July 2024.
