Johann Rupert was born in Stellenbosh, South Africa to renowned business man Anton Rupert and Huberte Ruperte on the 1st of June, 1950.
He grew up and started his educational journey in Stellenbosch, where he attended Paul Roos Gymnasium and later studied economics and company law at the University of Stellenbosch.
Although Johann left university without completing his degree, he was later awarded honorary doctorates in Economics by Stellenbosch University and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
