Maliwal’s activism began with her joining the NGO ‘Parivartan’, co-founded by Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia. She played a pivotal role in the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement, which led to the passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill. Her political journey continued as she served as the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) from July 2015 until January 2024, when she assumed office as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Delhi.
