The Oklahoma Sooners have made a significant addition to their defense by acquiring Kendal Daniels, a versatile linebacker and safety, from their in-state rival, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, via the transfer portal.

Daniels, who hails from Beggs, Oklahoma, was a standout four-star recruit in the 2021 class, recognized as the top player in the state and the fifth-ranked safety nationally.

During his tenure at Oklahoma State, Daniels redshirted his first year and then became a pivotal component of the Cowboys’ defense over the subsequent three seasons. His impressive statistics include 240 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 13 pass deflections, five interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

His outstanding performance earned him Freshman All-American honors and the title of Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2022.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 240 pounds, Daniels brings a unique blend of size, speed, and versatility to the Sooners’ defense. His ability to play both linebacker and safety positions makes him a valuable asset, particularly for Oklahoma’s “cheetah” position—a hybrid role that demands adaptability and athleticism.

The acquisition of Daniels is a strategic move for Oklahoma, especially considering the departure of key defensive players after the 2024 season. His experience and proven track record are expected to provide immediate impact and leadership to the defensive unit.

It’s noteworthy that Daniels had previously been recruited by Oklahoma’s current head coach, Brent Venables, during Venables’ tenure as defensive coordinator at Clemson. This prior connection may have influenced Daniels’ decision to transfer to Oklahoma, where he is anticipated to thrive under Venables’ defensive schemes.

The transfer also adds an intriguing layer to the storied rivalry between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Securing a high-caliber player from a direct competitor not only strengthens the Sooners’ roster but also underscores the dynamic nature of college football’s transfer portal, where player movements can significantly alter team compositions and rivalries.

As the Sooners prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Kendal Daniels signifies a commitment to enhancing their defensive capabilities. Fans and analysts alike will be keen to observe how Daniels integrates into the team and contributes to Oklahoma’s pursuit of excellence in college football.
